Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, shares her experience of becoming her big brother’s primary caregiver after losing her mother. She now faces the challenge of caring for her neurodivergent sibling, Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor.
Stuart requires assistance with daily tasks like feeding, transfers, bathing, grooming, and emotional support due to his condition. Simone reflects on their childhood struggles, where Stuart’s behaviors often led to misunderstandings and embarrassment, particularly in social settings.
Despite their differences, Simone acknowledges her own neurodivergent traits, such as ADHD, and the effort she puts into managing them to maintain a peaceful living environment for both siblings. She highlights the importance of understanding and accommodating Stuart’s needs, emphasizing the significance of communication and mutual respect in their cohabitation.
Simone expresses regret for not advocating for Stuart in the past and now sees their living arrangement as an opportunity to strengthen their bond and support each other. While sacrifices have been made, including giving up personal interests for caregiving responsibilities, she values the relationship with her brother above all else.
Through a combination of personal growth, external support, and a positive attitude, Simone aims to create a nurturing and inclusive home for herself and Stuart, embracing this second chance to be a better sibling and caregiver.
