In Minnesota, ICE agents have adopted a new phrase in the aftermath of the tragic death of Renee Good in the city last week.
Multiple videos have surfaced recently showing officers warning peaceful demonstrators to stop trailing them or to adhere to their instructions. Many of them are heard asking, “Have you not grasped the lesson?” This phrase alludes to an ICE agent fatally shooting the mother of three in a Minneapolis street last Wednesday.
The escalation of anti-immigration personnel deployed by Donald Trump into the state continued through the night, with tensions escalating further. Ms. Good was shot three times by an ICE officer as she tried to maneuver her car around him and leave. Despite clear video evidence demonstrating she posed no threat to the officer or those nearby, Trump officials labeled her a “domestic terrorist” and supported the agent’s actions as self-defense.
Several prosecutors, including First Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson, have stepped down in protest against the Justice Department’s handling of the shooting. Thompson was overseeing the extensive prosecution of public fraud cases in the state. In response to the Department of Homeland Security’s plan to dispatch over 2,000 immigration officers to Minnesota, the state, along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday to halt or limit the influx.
The lawsuit alleges that Homeland Security is infringing on the First Amendment and other constitutional rights by targeting a progressive state that leans Democratic and is welcoming to immigrants. Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis commented, “We are witnessing thousands — yes, thousands — of federal agents entering our city. And, indeed, they are significantly impacting daily life.” A status conference has been scheduled for Wednesday.
Homeland Security reports over 2,000 arrests made in the state since early December and asserts its determination not to retreat. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson, accused Minnesota officials of disregarding public safety in response to the lawsuit. Meanwhile, ICE agents deployed tear gas and eye irritants against activists during another round of clashes last night, while students staged a walkout at a suburban school to denounce the immigration raids.
