A man was fatally shot by police officers after he brandished a bow and arrow at them. The incident occurred during a welfare check at a residence on Quia Road in Gunnedah, located approximately 450km north-west of Sydney. Upon police arrival, the man engaged with officers outside the house before reemerging armed with a bow and arrow, which he then aimed at the police.
Following a press release by the New South Wales Police, officers were compelled to seek cover in their vehicle as the man posed a threat. In response to the situation, police discharged a firearm, resulting in the man’s death despite immediate medical attention.
A spokesperson from the NSW police stated that a critical incident investigation has been initiated following the shooting. The authorities were initially summoned to the property on Quia Road due to concerns about the man’s well-being. After confronting the man armed with the bow and arrow, the officers resorted to using their firearm when he directed the weapon at them. Despite efforts by NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will be overseen by a critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. Additionally, the Professional Standards Command will review the inquiry with supervision from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
