Torrential rain triggered a dangerous event in Tenerife as rocks smashed into vehicles along the treacherous TF-82 route, sparking outrage from a local mayor. Startling images captured the aftermath with two cars wrecked on the clifftop road connecting Tamaimo and Santiago del Teide on the popular Spanish island.
Two drivers narrowly escaped a calamity as their vehicles were severely damaged in the collision but fortunately, they emerged unscathed. One car’s rear end was completely flattened, while the other had a large boulder perched on its front above the right headlight.
The scene was littered with rubble, making the road impassable, highlighting the risks on this notorious route. Emilio Navarro, the mayor of Santiago del Teide, vented his frustration on social media, emphasizing the longstanding warnings about the road’s perilous conditions.
Motorists, aided by police and maintenance crews, faced additional hazards from the sheer rock face flanking parts of the roadway during the cleanup operation. This incident was not the first on TF-82, as a similar event had led to the road’s closure just a month prior.
In a separate episode last April, fifteen locals were evacuated in Tenerife’s northeast following a landslide that struck a property. The incident occurred in La Laguna along the TF-13 road, with authorities cautioning about traffic disruptions during the investigation.
Landslides, as defined by the WHO, involve the movement of soil, rocks, or debris down a slope due to natural or human-induced factors, including mudslides and debris flows.
