Steve Coogan, known for his role in Alan Partridge, criticized Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, labeling the party as ‘anti-human rights’. The actor and comedian from Greater Manchester, set to play football manager Mick McCarthy in the upcoming film Saipan, expressed concern over global leaders’ belief that they can act without restraint during international conflicts.

In an interview with Big Issue, Coogan expressed his distress about the acceptability of behavior in conflicts, referencing events in Gaza and military actions by the US. He highlighted his worries about the erosion of human rights and criticized Reform UK for their stance against human rights, viewing it as bureaucratic red tape.

Aside from his criticism of Reform UK, Coogan also discussed the movie Saipan, which will premiere in UK cinemas on January 23. The film depicts the infamous clash between former Ireland captain Roy Keane and ex-manager Mick McCarthy during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Coogan mentioned that the initial narrative of the film favored Roy Keane, but he pushed for a more balanced portrayal. He emphasized the merits of both characters, with Mick aiming to make the World Cup experience meaningful for Ireland, while Roy Keane rebelled against the underdog narrative.

Best known for portraying Partridge, Coogan’s character made a mark on television in various shows like Knowing Me Knowing You With Alan Partridge and I’m Alan Partridge. His cinematic appearances include movies like 24-Hour Party People (2002), The Look Of Love (2013), and Stan And Ollie (2018).

Reform UK has been approached for comment. The full interview with Coogan can be found in this week’s Big Issue, currently available from vendors.
