A 194-year-old tortoise named Jonathan has intrigued scientists with its longevity secrets. Jonathan, an Aldabra giant tortoise, holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest-known land animal, surpassing the typical lifespan of giant tortoises by about a century. In a recent study, researchers examined Jonathan’s genome to uncover clues behind its exceptional lifespan. Led by Dr. Stephen Clark, a neuro-oncologist and chief scientist at the longevity nonprofit Kallel, the study revealed that certain parts of Jonathan’s genome responsible for gene regulation were comparable to those of five-year-old tortoises. The findings were detailed in the journal Science Advances.

Jonathan resides on the grounds of the governor’s residence in St. Helena, where it continues to captivate researchers and turtle enthusiasts alike with its remarkable age.

This research sheds light on the genetic factors that contribute to Jonathan’s exceptional longevity and may offer insights into defying the aging process in other organisms.
