Quebec’s independent police oversight agency is conducting an investigation following a police pursuit involving three different law enforcement agencies that resulted in one fatality and another individual sustaining serious injuries in the vicinity of Lévis overnight.
The incident unfolded when authorities responded to reports of a collision and gunfire on the Pierre-Laporte Bridge in Quebec City around 11:30 p.m. on Friday. The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) disclosed that one individual was gravely injured in the collision, and a suspect fled the scene driving a stolen vehicle.
After the suspect’s vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle on the bridge, shots were fired, resulting in one person being struck by two bullets. Provincial police initiated a pursuit of the stolen vehicle shortly before 1:30 a.m., successfully intercepting it at Lallemand Road and Guillaume-Couture Boulevard in Lévis with the assistance of local police.
Law enforcement officers from the Sûreté du Québec, Quebec City police service, and Lévis police swiftly surrounded the vehicle. A tactical unit from the provincial police discovered the individual inside the vehicle unconscious, and pronounced them deceased at the scene.
The person who sustained gunshot wounds is reported to be in stable condition, as confirmed by the police oversight agency. A team of seven BEI investigators has been assigned to probe the circumstances surrounding the police intervention, with additional assistance provided by Montreal police for the inquiry.
Simultaneously, Montreal police are conducting a separate investigation into the events leading up to the police intervention. The BEI is seeking information from witnesses and encourages them to reach out through the agency’s website to assist with the investigation.
