American rapper Rick Ross, whose real name is William Roberts II, was taken into custody in Miami Beach for alleged battery connected to a domestic violence incident, as confirmed by local authorities. The charges against Ross include one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor battery charge. He was subsequently released on bail, according to online court documents.
An unnamed woman reported to local law enforcement that she was assaulted by Ross on August 28 while living with him. She claimed that Ross accused her of infidelity and physically attacked her, including choking her with her shirt collar and slamming her against a wall. The incident was reported on Tuesday, leading to Ross turning himself in at the police station on Thursday morning.
In response to the allegations, Ross took to Instagram to maintain his innocence, calling the accusations “fabricated.” His legal representatives have stated that Ross has pleaded not guilty to both charges and urged the public to reserve judgment and allow the legal process to unfold.
Ross, a prominent rapper based in Miami since the 2000s, gained fame with his debut single “Hustlin'” in 2006 and later signed with Def Jam Records under Jay Z’s label. He achieved a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart with his first album, “Port of Miami,” and went on to establish his own label, Maybach Music Group, where he signed artists like Meek Mill and French Montana. An arraignment for his case is set for October 22.
