Rescue teams in Nepal are in a race against time to reach numerous workers believed to be trapped inside hydropower tunnels in the country’s mountains. This effort represents a crucial opportunity to find survivors following a devastating Himalayan flood that claimed over 1,200 lives.

The catastrophic flood, initiated by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border, wreaked havoc on towns and valleys in the mountainous region. With 1,204 confirmed deaths and more than 4,200 people still missing, rescue operations have intensified around hydroelectric project tunnels where workers are thought to have taken refuge.

Authorities are focusing on these tunnels as potential locations where workers may have survived due to the presence of air supplies in some chambers. Approximately 900 missing workers are being targeted for rescue efforts, with optimism stemming from provisions like food and water found in the structures.

While the likelihood of finding survivors elsewhere diminishes, rescue operations continue unabated as teams scour the mountainous terrain along the China border, which bore the brunt of the devastating floods. Prime Minister Balendra Shah affirmed the government’s commitment to ongoing search and rescue endeavors.

The rescue operations are concentrated on tunnels at four projects, with particular emphasis on two projects holding nearly 100 missing individuals, as these sites offer more favorable conditions for finding survivors. Notably, at Trishuli-3A, authorities believe there is a dry space within the tunnel with expected oxygen flow.

Specialized rescue teams from India, China, and the United States have been mobilized to aid in the tunnel rescue missions. Across the border in Tibet, China, the toll of the disaster has surged, with at least 21 fatalities and 541 individuals missing.

China has reopened the road to the Gyirong border crossing, enabling access to the core disaster zone for the first time, facilitating rescue operations. Efforts in Tibet involve deploying excavators, rescue teams, and life-detection equipment in challenging terrains to locate survivors.

Beijing has pledged additional support to Nepal, including DNA identification experts and emergency supplies, to bolster relief efforts. Meanwhile, Nepal is gradually restoring essential services like power supply and telecommunication with the assistance of foreign aid, aiming to stabilize the affected regions.
