In 1986, the Nintendo Entertainment System introduced the iconic title “Castlevania,” known for its monster-fighting action and challenging gameplay. Over the past four decades, the series has expanded with numerous sequels, spinoffs, and crossover media. However, the franchise has remained dormant since the release of its last installment in 2014 by its publisher, Konami from Japan.
Now, a new game called “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” seeks to attract both new and existing fans by drawing inspiration from various chapters of the series’ history and indie games influenced by it. This latest installment offers a nostalgic blend of classic 2D exploration and stunning artistic direction, although its high level of difficulty might pose a challenge for newcomers to the genre.
Set in 1499, “Belmont’s Curse” follows Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades from the 1989 game “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.” As Paris faces a monster invasion, players control Rose as she navigates the city to unravel the mysteries surrounding the supernatural threats. Additionally, Rose must combat a curse inherited from her mother, which threatens to transform her into a monstrous being if she succumbs to hatred.
The gameplay of “Belmont’s Curse” mirrors the fan-favorite “Symphony of the Night” from 1997, offering a non-linear exploration experience akin to Metroid and Zelda games. Players guide Rose through Paris and Dracula’s castle, unveiling interconnected locations and overcoming obstacles with new abilities and equipment.
While the game delivers a visually captivating experience with its striking art direction and dynamic soundtrack, it presents formidable challenges. Players must strategize and hone their reflexes to overcome fierce enemies and navigate intricate trap rooms, which demand precision and timing. Despite its rewarding gameplay, the need for extensive backtracking and limited save points may test players’ patience.
One notable concern is the performance issues reported on the Nintendo Switch version, including low-resolution visuals, extended load times, and input delays. However, the Xbox Series X version offers a smoother and more responsive gameplay experience. Konami has promised an update to address these issues across all platforms.
“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” blends nostalgia with modern gaming elements, making it a compelling addition to the renowned series. Fans of challenging gameplay and immersive storytelling will find this latest installment a worthy continuation of the beloved franchise.
