Toronto police have announced the arrest of a man in connection with the torching of multiple cars at the residence of a Scarborough MP. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, faces charges including arson, property damage, conspiracy, possession of incendiary material, and probation order non-compliance. The police have taken possession of a 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be linked to the incident and are seeking information on its whereabouts before the arson.
Authorities are also on the lookout for a second suspect related to the case. The arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid, who represents the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East federal riding. The incident involved an unidentified individual pouring accelerant on vehicles in the driveway on August 27, igniting two cars before fleeing, leading to damage to a third vehicle.
Zahid expressed gratitude towards Toronto police following the arrest announcement, emphasizing the ongoing investigation and the absence of a known motive for the crime. As a Liberal backbencher representing Scarborough Centre since 2015, Zahid chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
Numerous political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, denounced the incident as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The case continues to attract attention and condemnation from various quarters.
