Tennessee is set to change the name of Nashville International Airport to honor the legendary country music figure Dolly Parton, following her recent passing at the age of 80. The decision was influenced by a social media initiative by fans to pay tribute to Parton after her demise. Governor Bill Lee engaged with Parton’s team to discuss this alteration, emphasizing that Parton’s impact on Tennessee is profound and deserves recognition at a global entry point like Nashville International Airport.

A meeting scheduled for September 17 will address the proposal to rename the airport, considering the current restrictions outlined in the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy, which typically requires a two-year waiting period posthumously. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is supporting this change, highlighting Parton’s pivotal role in promoting Tennessee’s tourism and culture worldwide.

Born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton’s humble beginnings in Locust Ridge shaped her illustrious career. From her early days performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to becoming a renowned singer-songwriter with hits such as “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Parton’s musical legacy has left an indelible mark. With over 100 million records sold and 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, she stands as one of the best-selling female artists in history.
