Millions Face HMRC Fines for Missed Tax Deadline

An estimated one million individuals have missed the deadline for self-assessment tax submissions, incurring an immediate £100 penalty from HMRC. According to recent HMRC data, 475,722 taxpayers waited until the final day, January 31, to file their tax returns, with 27,456 submissions made in the eleventh hour. Out of an anticipated 12 million tax filers for the 2024/25 fiscal year, over 11.48 million managed to meet the deadline.

Individuals required to submit self-assessment include the self-employed and those earning supplementary income beyond their primary employment. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, expressed gratitude to the millions who adhered to the deadline, emphasizing the need for late filers to submit their returns promptly to avoid penalties and accruing late payment interest. Utilizing HMRC’s digital platforms is recommended for swift tax resolution.

In other news, Tony’s Chocolonely experienced increased sales despite higher cocoa costs, reporting revenues of €240 million (£207 million) in the year ending September, a 20% surge from the previous year. The UK and Ireland alone accounted for €51.2 million (£44.2 million) in revenues, a 14% rise from the year prior. CEO Douglas Lamont highlighted the brand’s 4% volume growth amid industry challenges.

Meanwhile, Guys Thatched Hamlet, a renowned hotel and restaurant near Bilsborrow in Lancashire, abruptly closed after 46 years of operation, leaving patrons dismayed. The closure resulted in the redundancy of all staff members. The vast site, encompassing various amenities such as a tavern, restaurant, and sports pavilion, now bears a closure notice, marking the end of its longstanding operation.
