Labour Party’s Head Alerts Putin on Russia’s Activities in UK Waters Following Sighting of Suspected ‘Shadow Fleet’ Ship
The leader of the Labour Party has issued a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that the UK government is closely monitoring Russia’s actions in British waters after the detection of a suspicious vessel known as a “zombie” ship in the English Channel.
Anna Turley, speaking on behalf of Labour Party Chair Keir Starmer, expressed pride in Starmer’s ongoing efforts on the global stage alongside international allies. The vessel in question, named Tavian, was observed approximately 20 miles north of Guernsey en route to Finland during the early morning hours, based on tracking data of ship movements.
Tavian is believed to be linked to Vladimir Putin’s alleged ‘shadow fleet,’ a tactic utilized to circumvent restrictions on the trading of Russian oil.
In an interview with Sky News, Labour Party representative Ms. Turley affirmed the government’s capacity to oversee maritime activities in the surrounding waters. She commended Keir Starmer’s recent engagements with a coalition of supportive nations, particularly in assisting Ukraine and engaging on an international scale.
“We are devoted to monitoring the situation closely, collaborating with our partners to uphold international laws, ensuring the safety of citizens, and vigilantly tracking Russia’s activities in these waters,” Ms. Turley stated.
This development occurred shortly after the UK provided assistance to the United States in seizing a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander highlighted the significance of combating Russia’s attempts to evade sanctions, emphasizing the need for cooperation with international allies like the US.
The operation, supported by RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce, successfully intercepted the vessel in the Atlantic. Despite the involvement of US special operations aircraft, British personnel did not partake in the boarding process, as confirmed by Defence Secretary John Healey during a parliamentary session.
The vessel, previously identified as the Bella 1 and connected to Venezuela, was apprehended as it navigated through the waters between Iceland and Scotland. Following the operation, the US military’s European Command expressed gratitude on social media for the UK’s steadfast support in the mission.
In an interview with BBC Radio Scotland’s Breakfast program, Mr. Alexander underscored the vessel’s status as stateless under international law, noting its transponder deactivation. He emphasized the UK’s commitment to preventing illegal funding of conflicts, terrorism, and suffering, aligning with the US request for operational assistance in surveillance support.
“We must collaborate with allies to counter the recurring attempts at sanction evasion orchestrated by Russia,” Mr. Alexander emphasized, advocating for the disruption of financial channels fueling Putin’s military actions.
Efforts are ongoing within the UK and globally to address and impede the financial mechanisms supporting Russia’s military endeavors.
