A recent study revealed that nearly 69% of the UK population is currently experiencing winter blues, with 38% indicating that this winter feels more disheartening than the previous one. The top factors contributing to January blues include long dark nights (37%), chilly weather (54%), distant memories of Christmas (29%), and a lack of motivation (24).
Despite these challenges, almost half (49%) of the 2,000 surveyed individuals have identified strategies to maintain a positive outlook during this gloomy month. The research highlighted that indulging in a whole chocolate bar alone is the most popular remedy for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), with 47% leaning on it as a mood lifter. Additionally, 41% prefer to lift their spirits by getting cozy and cranking up the heating, while an equal percentage find solace in planning a sunny vacation.
Engaging in outdoor activities remains a key mood booster, with 33% finding solace in taking brisk winter walks while staying warm. Furthermore, simple pleasures such as donning cozy socks (29%), ordering favorite takeout (24%), enjoying comedy shows (23%), or rewatching beloved films (21%) play a significant role in combating the winter blues.
Many individuals find comfort in small, homely activities like snuggling with pets, savoring hot chocolate with whipped cream, or relishing hot buttered crumpets. Interestingly, 20% of the population humorously contemplate relocating to warmer destinations weekly during January, with 56% expressing a fondness for winter sun and 19% finding solace in the anticipation of sunny days ahead.
MSC Cruises is promoting ways to uplift spirits in January by introducing the ‘Sunbrella’, a cutting-edge umbrella featuring Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) lamp technology. This innovative product allows users to shield themselves from rain while experiencing a warm glow and a serotonin boost on dreary winter days.
Antonio Paradiso, Vice President of International Sales at MSC Cruises, emphasized the longing for sunshine among people during winter. While the Sunbrella offers a playful solution, Paradiso highlighted that nothing compares to the real warmth of the sun.
For those seeking an escape from the winter monotony, MSC Cruises offers various winter sun holiday options. With prices starting from £449 per person for a Caribbean cruise on March 2, 2026, aboard MSC Seaside, now is an ideal time to book a sunshine retreat.
According to the survey respondents, alternative ways to combat winter blues include indulging in a substantial takeaway, purchasing lottery tickets, and practicing meditation. Additionally, various activities such as enjoying sweets, decluttering, listening to upbeat music, hitting the gym, preparing a lavish roast, revisiting favorite books, updating wardrobes, and reminiscing through old photos were highlighted as effective mood-lifting strategies.
