Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are being advised to evacuate Kyiv due to severe Russian assaults that have left half of the city’s residences frozen, escalating the risk of a “humanitarian catastrophe.”
The conflict has intensified as Ukraine vows to eliminate “50,000 Russians a-month” in an effort to push back Moscow’s forces. With over 600,000 Kyiv residents already fleeing the city, Mayor Vitali Klitschko warns that Russia’s actions are driving Kyiv towards a dire situation.
Mayor Klitschko’s urgent plea to the populace is to depart if possible, as Russian offensives attempt to subdue Ukrainians grappling with temperatures as low as minus 16 degrees. Nearly half of Kyiv, with a population of around three million, is now without essential services such as heating, water, and electricity, affecting 5,600 apartment buildings.
Authorities have been forced to empty the city’s central heating and water infrastructure to prevent pipes from freezing and rupturing. Local residents express the challenges they face, with one individual highlighting the struggle of not being able to use basic amenities like toilets and keeping young children warm.
As the city grapples with escalating crises, the prospect of being able to flush a toilet post-water thaw is seen as a luxury, underscoring the imminent disaster due to Russian targeting of civilians. In response to the escalating conflict, Ukraine’s new defense minister emphasizes the need to eliminate 50,000 Russians monthly to make progress in the war.
The situation worsens as Russia prepares to deploy 400,000 additional troops this year and establish 11 divisions to advance in the conflict. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict traces back to 2014, starting with the invasion of Crimea after the Maidan Revolution.
In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, sparking the largest European conflict since World War II and triggering a mass exodus of refugees. Over a million Russian troops have either perished on the frontlines or sustained severe injuries, impacting their military strength.
