Israeli airstrikes in a southern Lebanese town resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, including two children, on Monday morning, as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. This incident marked one of the deadliest episodes of Israeli bombardment in recent weeks, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of Israeli military actions in Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement in June aimed at ending hostilities between the Israeli military and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
According to a witness who claimed to be related to some of the deceased, one of the attacks targeted a residential building while children were preparing for school. The Israeli military stated that the strike was carried out against individuals observed transferring weapons in the vicinity of Kfar Rumman town. At the scene, Reuters journalists observed schoolbooks scattered amid the rubble of the destroyed building, with rescue workers using heavy machinery to recover bodies trapped beneath the debris.
Eight-year-old Mustafa Farhat lost his mother and grandparents in the attack, with his father still missing as rescue teams searched for him. Mustafa, receiving medical treatment in the hospital, was a victim of the assault on his family home just before school hours. Mona Farhat, a relative, expressed frustration and defiance at the hospital, questioning the rationale behind the targeting of their residence.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of 11 individuals, including two children and four women, in the residential building strike, as confirmed by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Additionally, the ministry reported that one medic was killed in a separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in the town, with two other medics sustaining injuries.
The Israeli military conducted these strikes without issuing an online evacuation warning, prompting questions about the protection of civilians during such operations. While Israel’s military asserted efforts to minimize harm through precise munitions and aerial surveillance, it acknowledged the need to investigate reports of civilian casualties resulting from the attacks.
In response to Hezbollah’s alleged deployment of explosive drones towards Israeli forces near the Ali al-Taher ridge, Israel claimed to have removed Hezbollah fighters from the strategic hill complex. Subsequent Israeli airstrikes targeted towns north and west of the ridge, where residents had returned following the ceasefire in June, as per Lebanese security officials. These officials anticipate further escalations in southern Lebanon in the coming weeks.
The situation has escalated since Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israel in early March, triggering a significant death toll in Lebanon from Israeli strikes. Despite a ceasefire that reduced violence, Israeli forces have continued operations in southern Lebanon, including the destruction of villages in a designated security zone without prior evacuation warnings.
