A football supporter who amassed more than £260,000 for charity through the sale of samosas. A mother who plunged into the ocean to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. And a five-year-old girl who displayed remarkable courage in rebuilding her life after losing both legs.

These represent just a few of the exceptional winners honored at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast pool of public nominations, these ordinary individuals were recognized at a glamorous ceremony in London co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.

Following the ceremony, there was an unforgettable surprise. The new headline sponsor of the Pride of Britain Awards, P&O Cruises, generously gifted each of the 12 winners a cruise holiday – providing them with an opportunity to enjoy a memorable trip with their families.

We spoke with three heroes who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean voyage aboard the Britannia, visiting eight picturesque islands and indulging in top-notch entertainment.

Aiyla Mota, Young Hero

At just shy of her fourth birthday, Aiyla Mota fell ill with what initially appeared to be a routine childhood infection. Within a short span, it escalated into sepsis, resulting in multiple organ failure and necessitating the amputation of both her legs and five fingers to save her life.

Now aged five, Aiyla has made a remarkable recovery. Her bravery and optimism have astounded those around her, leading to her receiving a Pride of Britain Award and becoming one of the youngest-ever recipients.

Her mother, Eulanda, 28, from Middlesex, proudly states: “Aiyla has always had a vibrant personality, and despite her ordeal, she has not lost that spark. In fact, she is even more vivacious, confident, and bubbly than before. She’s like Aiyla multiplied by 100!

“My grandmother says it’s as though she realizes she has been given a second chance at life and is making the most of it.”

After being awarded her prize by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family journeyed to the Caribbean, accompanied by Aiyla’s grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis. They reveled in exploring some of Britannia’s 27 dining establishments and bars, eight live performance venues, and four swimming pools.

“The cruise was an amazing vacation, and I am extremely thankful to P&O Cruises for this incredible opportunity,” expresses Eulanda. “It was our first cruise experience, and we weren’t quite sure what to expect.

“One surprising aspect was that at times, you forgot you were on a ship due to the plethora of activities available.

“Aiyla particularly adored the kids’ club, the entertainment, and staying up late! During our island visits, she relished the beaches and a rainforest excursion.

“For me, visiting Barbados was particularly special. My father and grandparents hailed from there, but I had never visited. Stepping onto the land, I felt immensely blessed to be there and to reconnect with my family’s roots. It was a profound experience.”

Emily Greenwood, Remarkable Courage

During a leisurely winter stroll along her local Cornish coastline with her disabled son, Isaac, Emily Greenwood witnessed a sudden crisis unfold.

A 10-year-old boy surfing on a bodyboard became trapped in a riptide, swiftly being carried out to sea. His mother cried out in distress as her partner attempted to assist but was also swept into the strong current.

Without hesitation, Emily, 53, a mother of three, secured Isaac’s wheelchair in a safe location on the beach at Holywell Bay before plunging into the frigid water. Battling chilling temperatures and forceful waves, she swam 400 meters to reach the imperiled trio.

“The boy kept exclaiming, ‘We’re going to die,’” recollects Emily. “I reassured them, ‘Stay calm and follow my lead.’”

Utilizing the bodyboard as a makeshift flotation device, she guided them back to shore, propelled by sheer determination.
