“Martin Lewis: Premium Bonds Lose Appeal Amid Rate Cut”

Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert.com team has analyzed the value of Premium Bonds following NS&I’s announcement of a reduction in its prize fund rate. Premium Bonds, a savings product, offer a chance to win prizes through a monthly draw instead of a fixed interest rate. The prizes range from £25 to £1 million, with higher chances of winning smaller amounts than the top prize.

NS&I recently confirmed a decrease in the Premium Bonds prize fund rate from 3.6% to 3.3% starting from the April 2026 draw. This rate serves as the equivalent of an interest rate for Premium Bonds, with the odds of winning a prize per bond dropping from 1 in 22,000 to 1 in 23,000.

According to Martin Lewis’ team, the latest rate cut makes Premium Bonds less competitive compared to other savings options. They noted that the majority of savers are unlikely to earn a return of 3.6% or 3.3%, even with the maximum £50,000 investment. Savings accounts that offer interest are now more likely to outperform Premium Bonds, providing a guaranteed return and greater certainty compared to the prize draw system.

Although some individuals may still find value in investing in Premium Bonds, most are expected to receive less than the prize fund rate and have minimal chances of winning the top £1 million prize. Overall, opting for savings accounts with fixed interest rates may offer a more reliable and potentially higher return for savers.
