A mother reveals that her seven-year-old daughter has developed a fear of the sea after contracting a parasite while on a family trip to Cornwall last summer. Little Willow Clarke experienced extreme discomfort for 12 days, including frequent vomiting, weight loss, and delirium, before being diagnosed with cryptosporidium, a pathogen commonly found in human and animal waste that can contaminate various sources including water bodies.

The severity of Willow’s illness forced her to miss being a bridesmaid at her aunt’s wedding, a disappointment for the young girl. This incident adds to growing concerns about the health risks associated with swimming in sea waters due to potential contamination from raw sewage, highlighted in Channel 4’s docu-drama “Dirty Business.”

Willow’s mother, Alice, recalls the day at Carlyon Bay in Cornwall when Willow fell ill. Despite not ingesting seawater, Willow’s symptoms quickly appeared, leading to a distressing ordeal that included continuous vomiting and dehydration. Alice sought medical help, and after a harrowing 12 days, Willow began to show signs of improvement.

Although physically recovered, Willow’s mental trauma persists, as she now avoids the sea entirely. Alice firmly believes that Willow’s illness was a result of exposure to contaminated seawater, emphasizing the lasting impact on both of them. The financial strain from taking time off work to care for Willow adds to the family’s hardship, underscoring the need for better water quality management.

South West Water denied any responsibility, stating they do not have storm overflows at Carlyon Bay. However, the possibility of the parasite entering the water from other sources remains. Studies suggest cryptosporidium can survive in seawater for extended periods, raising concerns about water safety standards and public health.
