A horse named Frosty was saved from near-death when discovered partially submerged in a frozen creek in January. Thanks to the support of local communities and horse enthusiasts nationwide, Frosty has made a remarkable recovery and is adjusting well to his new life. The horse was found by a resident stuck in Lehman Creek near Cochin, Sask., and was rescued by the village’s mayor, Mark Pattinson, and his friend Ed Scott.

Upon freeing Frosty from the icy stream, it was evident that he was in poor health. Despite the initial grim outlook, Frosty showed resilience by getting back on his feet and walking to a nearby maintenance shop where he awaited assistance. Following the passing of his owner, Frosty needed urgent medical care. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a new caretaker among local horse owners, Leslie-Ann Smith, a compassionate farmer, stepped in to help.

Smith and her husband transported Frosty to a veterinary clinic for treatment of his extensive injuries, including a hernia that had ruptured from his left leg. Frosty underwent multiple therapies and treatments during his recovery, which were financially supported by donations from across the country, inspired by his heartwarming story shared on social media.

Nearly seven months post-rescue, Frosty has transformed from a withdrawn and antisocial horse to a sociable and affectionate companion at the Smith farm. Despite his past as a relay horse, there are no plans to return Frosty to competitive racing. His newfound happiness and well-being are attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Cochin, Saulteaux First Nation, and Moosomin First Nation communities, alongside Frosty’s unwavering will to survive. Today, Frosty enjoys local celebrity status and continues to thrive in his loving and caring environment.
