Canada’s top science advisor suggests that the Canadian government should evaluate its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance the country’s and its citizens’ readiness for future public health crises. Mona Nemer emphasized the importance of acknowledging people’s feelings and experiences related to the pandemic’s impact, including loss of livelihood, loved ones, and disruptions in education. She stressed the need for a focused, non-political reflection process that addresses specific questions to prevent a prolonged review period.

Nemer highlighted the significance of providing context and a constructive mindset for discussions on contentious issues like vaccine debates. She emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences to better equip the nation and its population for future health challenges. The science advisor’s remarks coincided with Conservative MP Dean Allison’s announcement of an upcoming inquiry in September focusing on individuals purportedly harmed by COVID-19 vaccinations.

In discussing public trust in authorities regarding infectious diseases, Nemer expressed concern over diminishing confidence in government and scientific institutions. She emphasized the importance of transparency and engagement with diverse perspectives to address distrust and misinformation effectively. Nemer also raised alarm about the global response to infectious diseases like Ebola, citing delays in diagnostics and containment efforts as significant challenges.

Nemer urged for integrating pandemic preparedness into routine health services and maintaining vigilance against emerging threats like Ebola, mumps, and bird flu. She emphasized the ongoing need for proactive measures to address future outbreaks effectively and emphasized the importance of building public trust during peacetime to navigate crises more effectively.
