Barry and Eddie Hearn have exceeded the £1 billion mark with their sports media empire. The dynamic father and son duo are the owners of Matchroom Sports, a company that operates in the realms of boxing, snooker, and darts.
Barry initially made his mark in snooker during the 1970s, representing the six-time world champion Steve Davis. Establishing Matchroom in 1982, the 77-year-old Barry, along with his 46-year-old son Eddie, has significantly expanded the empire, particularly gaining recognition in the boxing world.
Matchroom has managed renowned athletes such as Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank Sr, and Lennox Lewis, but is currently most recognized for its association with Anthony Joshua. Additionally, Barry serves as the chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation, contributing to the surge in popularity of darts in recent years. He also holds a substantial influence in the world of snooker, having acquired the World Snooker Tour in 2010.
Their endeavors have resulted in significant wealth, propelling them to the third spot on The Sunday Times rich list for UK sport with a combined net worth of £1.035 billion. They trail behind only F1 mogul Bernie Ecclestone (£2bn) and David and Victoria Beckham (£1.185bn).
Surpassing notable figures such as F1 driver Lewis Hamilton and golfer Rory McIlroy in terms of wealth, Matchroom’s top client, Joshua, stands at the eighth position on the rich list with an estimated worth of £240 million. Tyson Fury follows in ninth place with £162 million, while England captain Harry Kane and tennis legend Andy Murray share the tenth spot with £110 million each.
Despite Barry being the founder of the Matchroom empire, Eddie has played a significant role in its expansion. In a 2020 article for the Big Issue, Eddie emphasized how being Barry’s son has been a driving force for his success. He expressed his ambition to surpass his father’s achievements and elevate the business to new heights, emphasizing the competitive spirit between them.
