A significant explosion has caused multiple buildings to collapse, resulting in at least four individuals sustaining injuries and concerns that others might be trapped in the debris.

The incident occurred in the heart of Utrecht, Netherlands, prompting a rapid response from emergency services following a series of explosions that ignited a fire around 3pm today. Residents fled to nearby shopping areas for safety as firefighters battled the flames on Visscherssteeg street.

Videos captured massive flames engulfing the street amidst explosions, with a thick plume of smoke blanketing the city center and rubble strewn across the surroundings.

Due to structural damage from the blasts, buildings became unstable with visible cracks, preventing firefighters from entering. The blaze was being controlled externally, aided by drones, as efforts continued into the night.

A specialized team from Alphen aan den Rijn was dispatched to assist in searching for potential victims within the partially collapsed structures.

An emergency services spokesperson, Sjaak Haasnoot, reported that four injured individuals were transported to ambulances, with the possibility of more victims buried under the rubble. The severity of the injuries sustained remains undisclosed.

Haasnoot expressed challenges in determining the exact number of casualties trapped, citing the ongoing instability of the building.

Authorities have advised the public to steer clear of the area for safety reasons. Emergency services are assessing the collapsed buildings to conduct a safe search for potential survivors, amidst reports of extensive damage in the vicinity.

Witness Margot Schroevers described feeling the ground shake during the explosions, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

Limited visibility caused by heavy smoke is hindering emergency operations in the area, as emergency responders focus on searching the affected buildings for any remaining individuals.

Evaluation of each building section is underway to determine the safety of entry for emergency personnel, with gas utilities shut off in the impacted zone. Police investigations are ongoing, as the cause of the explosion remains undetermined, according to Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma.
