Last month, fans initiated a social media campaign advocating for the airport renaming, which garnered support from Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.
Governor Lee emphasized that Dolly Parton’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the state of Tennessee and that it is fitting for the airport, where the state welcomes visitors from around the world, to bear the name of the beloved singer. He highlighted Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness as enduring aspects of her character that should be celebrated.
The decision to rename the airport was described by Governor Lee as a significant step in honoring Dolly Parton’s remarkable legacy, noting her substantial contributions to Tennessee, including the economic impact generated by her Dollywood theme park, estimated at over $1.8 billion annually. Born in Tennessee in 1946, Dolly Parton rose to fame by showcasing the state’s culture and music scene on a global platform, starting from her early performances at the Grand Ole Opry.
Although the exact timeline for the renaming process remains unclear, the airport’s current policy stipulates that properties cannot be named after individuals until at least two years after their passing. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is currently collaborating with relevant stakeholders to determine the most appropriate way to incorporate Dolly Parton’s name and legacy into the airport’s identity.
