In the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the championship format has been adjusted back to a single-game setup. The decision came swiftly after the initial best-of-three final match between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers was canceled due to unsafe court conditions caused by condensation. As a result, a one-game final will now take place in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, broadcasted on CBC platforms.
Brampton had initially taken a 6-0 lead in the halted match, but the game was called off when Sea Bears’ Xavier Moon slipped on the court. The league emphasized that player, official, and fan safety is paramount, leading to the cancellation and revision of the championship format.
The Honey Badgers had previously won two games against the Sea Bears during the season, setting the stage for an intense final showdown. Both teams have showcased strong performances throughout the playoffs, with the Sea Bears defying odds and the Honey Badgers securing victories over tough opponents to reach the final clash.
Interestingly, the ownership of the two competing teams adds an extra layer of intrigue to the championship, as the Sea Bears and the Honey Badgers are owned by siblings David Asper and Leonard Asper, respectively. This familial connection off the court adds a unique dynamic to the upcoming final showdown.
The revised single-game championship format aims to crown a deserving champion efficiently and fairly, reminiscent of previous league finals. The stage is set for an exciting and competitive finale to determine the 2026 CEBL champion.
