Recent weather maps indicate that freezing rain is approaching various parts of the UK within the next few days, coinciding with an Arctic chill in late January.

After a period of relatively normal temperatures for this time of year in England, Scotland, and Wales, the weather is expected to shift back to colder conditions, with temperatures dropping to 1-2 degrees Celsius and potentially below zero in certain regions, as illustrated by WXCharts.

Accompanying the lower temperatures is the forecast of freezing rain and widespread snow, signaling a return to more severe weather conditions by the middle of the upcoming week.

According to the latest weather data, a snow system is predicted to develop over a significant portion of the UK starting on Wednesday, January 27, spreading from west to east and covering regions from London to Inverness.

The upcoming Arctic blast spanning 559 miles is expected to bring heavy snowfall, potentially accumulating up to two inches of snow in many areas, with Scotland experiencing temperatures ranging from 2 to -4 degrees Celsius, leading to freezing rain in some locations.

Two distinct episodes of freezing rain are anticipated in England, forming over high terrain in the Peak District National Park and later moving north to affect the North Pennines National Landscape.

These freezing rain occurrences are projected to be the main weather events for the day, with snow being the dominant feature, although the Met Office suggests a possibility of rain during this period. The Met Office’s extended forecast for January 26 to February 4 warns of colder temperatures and increased chances of snow amid prevailing rainy conditions.

The forecast elaborates, stating: “Weather systems from the Atlantic will continue to approach from the west but may stall near the UK due to high pressure from the north and northeast. Consequently, periods of rain or showers are likely, potentially heavy and persistent, with drier intervals more probable in the far north and northeast. While mild conditions may affect the south and southwest intermittently, a shift to colder weather is expected, heightening the risk of snow, particularly in Scottish and northern English hills, possibly extending to other areas over time.”
