Nicole Robichaud, a lawyer and caregiver in Ottawa, shares her heartfelt experience with a cherished family tradition that has evolved over the years. In 2015, at the age of 68, Nicole’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the challenges that followed, including moving to a retirement home and later to a memory care unit, the calendar remained a constant presence in her mother’s life.
As Alzheimer’s progressed, Nicole’s mother’s condition deteriorated, leading to moments of confusion and loss of basic functions. Despite these difficulties, Nicole found solace in continuing the tradition of buying the calendar annually. The simple act of turning the pages and sharing the colorful artwork with her mother provided a sense of purpose during visits, even as her mother’s ability to engage with the calendar diminished.
