In a stunning revelation, a woman misused her authority as an accounts manager in a family business to embezzle £767,000, funneling the funds into her gambling habit. This deceitful act pushed the company to the edge of financial ruin, jeopardizing the livelihoods of her colleagues and friends, as disclosed in court proceedings. Susanne Redhead, who had steadily climbed the ranks to the position of accounts manager at Pure Panel Management in Newcastle over a decade, perpetrated these fraudulent activities.

The illicit scheme unraveled when Redhead siphoned £100,000 within a week and pilfered £363,000 from the company in December 2024 alone. Following the discovery that she had been channeling payments to herself, she was promptly instructed to cease her duties. Confronted with her actions, she confessed, “I anticipated this. I’ve been engrossed in gambling.” An investigation later unveiled that between November 2023 and January 2025, she had conducted 445 unauthorized transactions, totaling £767,272.

During the Christmas break, Redhead exploited the office closure to wipe out the company’s accounts completely, according to the prosecution. Subsequently, the business found itself in negative financial territory for the first time in its history after she depleted its resources. Managing director James Gillam expressed shock and frustration in a victim impact statement, highlighting the severe repercussions of Redhead’s actions on the company and its employees.

The court sentenced Redhead, a first-time offender without prior criminal records, to three years in prison after she pleaded guilty to theft. Judge Tim Gittins, while delivering the verdict, condemned her for inflicting substantial harm on her colleagues, breaching their trust, and imperiling the company’s stability. Redhead’s defense attorney, Penny Hall, attributed her client’s actions to a gambling addiction that spiraled out of control, leading her to believe she could recoup the misappropriated funds.

Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings will be initiated against Redhead to recover any assets she may possess as part of the legal repercussions for her actions.
