Adsum House, a women’s shelter in Halifax, has raised concerns about a song recorded over a decade ago by Energy Minister Marco MacLeod, citing its “violent” and misogynistic lyrics. The song named George Jones, which featured derogatory language like “sluts,” “hoes,” and “bitches,” has sparked controversy. Adsum House expressed dismay over the content, emphasizing that MacLeod was in his 20s when the songs were recorded and well into his thirties when they were made available on digital platforms.

The shelter condemned the lyrics, stating that there is no tolerance for perpetuating violence against women under the guise of “boys will be boys.” Adsum House firmly believes that individuals promoting such beliefs and content should be disqualified from holding public office, regardless of their age at the time of creation.

MacLeod, who was elected to office in a 2024 byelection and subsequently re-elected, responded to the backlash by acknowledging the song’s content and expressing regret. He clarified that the song, created over a decade ago, no longer aligns with his values and would not be produced today. Adsum House pointed out that there were multiple songs with similar themes, prompting MacLeod to issue an apology and assure the public of his commitment to combat misogyny.

The Mass Casualty Commission’s findings on gender-based violence were also referenced by Adsum House, highlighting the need for accountability and change in addressing such issues. MacLeod’s office indicated that the lyrics were not reflective of his personal experiences and that he did not profit from the music.

In response to the controversy, the Premier’s office was contacted for comment, redirecting inquiries to the caucus office. The PC Party’s caucus acknowledged the seriousness of the Commission’s findings and emphasized the government’s obligation to address gender-based violence effectively.

MacLeod later issued a more detailed apology, taking full responsibility for the offensive lyrics and pledging to work towards eradicating misogyny in all forms. The song has been removed, and MacLeod expressed openness to dialogue with those affected by the situation.
