After dedicating five years to advocating for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), Christina Applegate disclosed that medical professionals now believe she may have received an incorrect diagnosis.

During a recent two-part episode of the MeSsy podcast, co-hosted by Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has MS, Applegate shared her journey of processing the revelation after some time away from the show.

Expressing a mix of emotions, Applegate mentioned feeling like she was starting over from scratch upon learning she did not have MS as previously thought. Despite the doctor’s congratulations on the misdiagnosis, Applegate felt lost rather than relieved, emphasizing that her health had not improved and, in some aspects, had deteriorated.

Multiple sclerosis is a complex autoimmune condition affecting the central nervous system, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin, a protective cover for nerves, leading to various symptoms like numbness, fatigue, and mobility issues.

Dr. Mark Freedman, from The Ottawa Hospital’s multiple sclerosis research unit, likened the disease to a wire with its outer rubber layer worn off, leaving the copper inside exposed. This vulnerability can lead to nerve damage and permanent disconnection due to inflammation.

Misdiagnoses are not uncommon globally, with studies indicating rates ranging from five to 41 percent. Applegate initially shared her MS diagnosis in August 2021, following symptoms of numbness and pain that led to extensive testing, including MRIs and a spinal tap.

Despite being diagnosed with nearly 40 brain lesions, recent advancements prompted a reevaluation of her condition, ultimately leading to the revelation that she did not have MS. The absence of a new diagnosis left Applegate grappling with uncertainty about her ongoing symptoms and feeling like she had let down those impacted by her advocacy efforts.

Applegate, known for her roles in various films and TV shows, including “Anchorman” and “Dead to Me,” expressed her disconcertment at the sudden lack of explanation for her health struggles.

Globally, over 3.1 million people live with MS, with Canada having a high prevalence, affecting roughly one in 400 Canadians, predominantly women. Diagnosing MS can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms with other conditions, necessitating careful evaluation to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatments.

Freedman highlighted the importance of accurate diagnosis, as improper MS treatments can pose risks by compromising the immune system. In Canada, where misdiagnosis rates are lower, comprehensive testing and follow-ups are emphasized to avoid labeling patients prematurely.

Despite the setback, Sigler reassured Applegate of the continued significance of her advocacy work, offering a perspective of hope for the future.
