Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, a decorated player with an Olympic gold medal and three Vezina trophies in the NHL, has officially requested a trade, ending months of speculation among hockey enthusiasts and fans.
In a statement released through his agent on Thursday, Hellebuyck disclosed that he had privately asked for a trade from the Jets a few months ago. The 33-year-old goalie stated that he had been handling the matter discreetly to allow the organization time to consider its options. However, with training camp approaching, he decided to make his request public, believing that moving on would be the best decision for him and his family.
Expressing gratitude to Winnipeg Jets fans for their support throughout his career, Hellebuyck is hopeful for a swift resolution. General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff acknowledged Hellebuyck’s desire for a change and praised his contributions to the team over the years. Cheveldayoff assured that the team would approach the situation thoughtfully and with respect for Hellebuyck’s achievements.
Hellebuyck, a native of Michigan, achieved a rare double honor as both the league’s MVP and top goaltender after the 2024-25 NHL season, during which the Jets secured their first-ever best record in franchise history. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team, Cheveldayoff did not offer any updates on the matter in his statement.
Throughout his career, Hellebuyck has demonstrated his exceptional skills, including being a five-time finalist for the Vezina Trophy. He was also honored by U.S. President Donald Trump with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his outstanding performance in the Olympic gold-medal game earlier this year, where he made 41 saves on 42 shots for the United States against Canada at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games.
