Japanese golfer Miyu Yamashita emerged victorious in her debut trip to Canada by securing the CPKC Women’s Open title in Edmonton. The 25-year-old clinched her fourth LPGA Tour win and second of the year with a dominant performance at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, finishing 23 under in the $2.75-million US tournament after shooting a 4-under-par 66 in the final round.
Maintaining a six-stroke lead after three rounds, Yamashita comfortably sealed the victory, outpacing her compatriot Yuri Yoshida by nine strokes, who finished at 14 under. Expressing her joy, Yamashita expressed gratitude for the support she received from the crowd and highlighted her enjoyment throughout the competition week.
Standing at just four-foot-11, Yamashita’s achievement in Edmonton matched the lowest four-day score in LPGA Tour history at 257, making her the fastest Japanese player to claim four LPGA victories. The event also featured notable performances from other Canadian players, including Anna Huang from Vancouver, who finished as the top Canadian tied for fourth at 12 under. Additionally, Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng tied for seventh at 11 under, securing the low amateur title for the second consecutive year.
Reflecting on her success, Huang emphasized the significance of playing in front of a home crowd and gaining invaluable experience. Both Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes granted them entry into the upcoming LPGA’s FM Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. World No. 1 Nelly Korda of the United States concluded the tournament at 1 under par.
Despite her 14 tour wins, Brooke Henderson faced challenges in the rough terrain, ultimately finishing tied for 13th at 7 under par. Henderson acknowledged the need for improved putting to enhance her performance in future events. Young talents like Michelle Xing and amateur players also showcased their skills, with the CPKC Women’s Open setting the stage for future golfing endeavors.
Looking ahead, the 2027 CPKC Women’s Open is slated to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Quebec.
