A push to locate a new site for a western St. John’s library has encountered a setback, but an advocate is hopeful that a suitable location will be secured soon. The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago following the expiration of its lease agreement. Despite efforts by the provincial government to solicit proposals for a new venue, no submissions were received.

Expressing frustration and disappointment, Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, highlighted the absence of library services for community members. Despite its modest size, the library was well-liked by patrons. The failed tender process is anticipated to prolong the relocation efforts, but Smee remains optimistic about the possibility of reopening the library in the western part of the city.

According to Janelle Simms, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, consultations are ongoing with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next course of action. Emphasizing the commitment to keep the library in the west end of St. John’s, Simms assured continuity of services in the area.

In a plea to potential landlords, Smee urged them to engage in the process, suggesting that overlooked opportunities might have contributed to the lack of submissions. Anticipating a revised tender in the near future, he emphasized the community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedicated staff who continue to serve despite the inadequate physical space.

Juanette Anthony, a library user, lamented the closure of the Michael Donovan Public Library, noting its convenient location and computer facilities. Expressing a desire for the library to reopen in the vicinity with expanded resources, Anthony stressed the importance of having access to a variety of books and computers.

The absence of bids for a new library site has prompted a reevaluation of strategies, with stakeholders eager to secure a suitable location for the beloved community facility.
