Robert Belley credits metal bars on his truck for saving his life after colliding with a moose near Lanigan in 2024. The impact left him with severe injuries, including limited use of his left hand, preventing him from working in construction and causing financial strain. Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) highlights the increased risk of wildlife collisions during this time of year, with an average of 8,800 incidents reported annually in the province, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

Belley emphasizes the seriousness of wildlife collisions, urging drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed on highways. SGI advises drivers to be vigilant for wildlife, especially deer, which are more active in the fall. Troy Corbett from SGI recommends staying calm, slowing down, and steering away from animals if a collision is unavoidable.

Bonnie Dell, from the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, stresses the value of each animal involved in collisions, with deer and coyotes being the most common victims. Dell encourages drivers to contact their organization for assistance in such situations. Bernie Borgmann, a veteran tow truck operator, describes the impact of wildlife collisions as akin to hitting a wall, highlighting the danger and emotional toll they can take on individuals.
