Canadian athletes Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw competitions, respectively, at the recent Diamond League event held in Chorzow, Poland.
Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed spectators at the Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, securing her position as the reigning champion in the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games. DeAnna Price from the United States claimed the second spot with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third place at 71.95 meters.
Continuing the Canadian dominance in hammer throw, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the top spot in the men’s event with a best throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg now holds titles in the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games. The second position was secured by Germany’s Merlin Hummel with a throw of 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász finished third with a throw of 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. Reigning world champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica set a meeting record by winning in 9.83 seconds, with Kenny Bednarek from the United States coming in second at 9.87 seconds, and Christian Coleman, a former world champion, finishing third in 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m event showcased American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden securing victory with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia finished second in a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States, the world champion of 2023 and silver medallist in the 2024 Olympics, took third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
In a surprising turn of events, American Ethan Strand claimed victory in the men’s 1,500m race with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech from Kenya finished second in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third place with a time of 3:31.16. Norwegian athlete Jakob Ingebrigtsen, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, secured the fourth position.
The upcoming and final Diamond League meeting of the season is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, leading up to the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The global track and field season will culminate with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship from September 11-13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in men’s hammer throw. However, Rogers, holding the same titles on the women’s side, will not participate as the women’s hammer throw event is not part of the championship program.
