Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutyrk is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida on October 1, carrying advanced Canadian technology. Space exploration poses health risks due to the human body’s unsuitability for prolonged low-gravity conditions, potentially leading to serious issues like blood clot formation. To address this concern, NASA has collaborated with Vancouver-based Response Biomedical to develop a device called Acute Care Testing in Space (ACTIS) that can quickly detect blood clots and other health conditions in space. This technology, originally designed for use on Earth, offers rapid and portable testing capabilities that are crucial for astronauts’ safety. The collaboration between NASA and Response Biomedical signifies a significant achievement for Canada in the field of space exploration. If successful, the ACTIS device could potentially be utilized in future missions to the moon or Mars as part of NASA’s ongoing efforts to expand human space exploration.
