Iran announced on Wednesday that it had carried out attacks on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the United States. This exchange of attacks marked a significant escalation in hostilities between the two sides since the beginning of the six-month-long conflict. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran claimed responsibility for launching a ballistic missile strike on a U.S. military base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, Iran reported firing on two American vessels and eight oil tankers that were attempting to navigate through a designated restricted area in the Strait of Hormuz.
The series of attacks in the strategic waterway led to a surge in oil prices, with the international benchmark Brent crude surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The ongoing conflict has disrupted global oil markets, with hopes of a resolution between the U.S. and Iran dashed. The escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen has further heightened uncertainties in energy markets, as evidenced by recent Houthi attacks on Saudi cities causing significant damage to oil installations.
The impact of the conflict is being felt by American consumers, with gasoline prices rising sharply. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. reached $4.15, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. Diesel prices also surged to $5.90 per gallon, reflecting a 59% year-over-year increase. The escalating tensions have raised concerns about the likelihood of a diplomatic resolution before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, according to analysts at Bank of America.
Similarly, gas prices in Canada have seen substantial increases since the start of the conflict, prompting the government to extend a gas tax holiday until the end of January. Iran’s announcement of a restricted maritime area extending from Chabahar in Iran into the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea has added to the maritime tensions in the region. Recent incidents, including a drone attack on an oil tanker in Iraqi waters and disabling fires on vessels in the Gulf of Oman, have further exacerbated the situation.
Iran’s threats to oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports have raised concerns about the safety of maritime shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil shipments, has been significantly affected by the conflict, leading to disruptions in oil and gas supplies. The U.S. has responded with a military blockade of Iranian ports, aiming to ensure the safe passage of tankers through the strait amid escalating tensions in the region.
