Flights will recommence at Wabush Airport on Wednesday following recent interruptions, as confirmed by PAL Airlines. The flight cancellations were attributed to the airport’s failure to meet the necessary federal firefighting and rescue requirements for commercial flights with over 19 passengers due to a mechanical issue affecting firefighting capability.
PAL Airlines announced via social media that the essential firefighting equipment for passenger flights has been reinstated, with flights 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the airport set to resume operations on Wednesday. Affected passengers will receive updated travel information from the airline’s reservations team regarding their flight arrangements.
Labrador MP Philip Earle expressed frustration over the recurring disruptions at the airport but remained optimistic about a prompt resolution to the latest issue. He highlighted the challenges faced, including maintenance on one fire truck and a part failure on the other, leading to a temporary halt in airport operations. The required parts were flown in from Edmonton and have arrived in Wabush, with Earle calling for a review of the incident to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The airport has faced various disruptions over the past year, including a brief shutdown in October 2025 due to changes in firefighting service requirements, extreme weather disruptions in December, and restrictions on aircraft landings in January. PAL Airlines facilitated a charter flight to deliver the necessary parts to Wabush, aiming to resume commercial services once the airport is ready to accommodate passenger flights.
Chris Bussey, co-founder of Advocates for Safer Airports in Canada, expressed concerns over the situation at Wabush Airport, emphasizing the need for improved emergency response capabilities at Canadian airports. He stressed the importance of adequate resources, maintenance plans, and on-site mechanics for emergency repairs to ensure preparedness for air traffic disasters. Bussey highlighted the significance of proper firefighting equipment at airports in emergency scenarios and called for increased attention to emergency response preparedness at airports across the country.
