Over 42,000 residents were mandated to evacuate from the expanding “GO NOW” zone, which extended to the vicinity of the University of Nevada. An additional 45,000 individuals found themselves in an evacuation warning zone. Authorities urged all affected individuals to evacuate immediately and be prepared to remain away from their homes for several days due to anticipated unpredictable fire behavior caused by shifting and intensifying winds.
Witnesses, such as Cari Kieffer, recounted devastating losses, with Kieffer sharing how a social media video depicted her home consumed by flames, leaving only a charred basketball hoop standing. Kieffer’s family had to hastily evacuate their residence on the outskirts of Reno after realizing that the fire was encroaching on their neighborhood, despite initial misconceptions fueled by delayed fire tracking information.
The Kieffer family, comprising Cari, her husband, and their four children, hastily gathered essential items, including their pets, before evacuating. Tragically, they later learned that their home had been destroyed by the wildfire, underscoring the rapid and destructive nature of the blaze.
In response to the emergency, Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard to provide aerial firefighting support and assist in maintaining security in evacuated areas. Additionally, 800 fire personnel were deployed to combat the wildfire.
The catastrophic fire led to power outages affecting nearly 10,000 customers in Washoe County, with sections of U.S. Route 395 being closed due to the fire’s impact. Washoe County emergency services established evacuation centers, including the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, offering shelter to displaced individuals. However, pet owners were advised to seek alternative accommodations for their animals as pets were not allowed at the designated evacuation sites.
