In a field on his farm in southern England, James Baird indicated deep cracks in the ground, mentioning how some were large enough to swallow an arm. A veteran crop farmer in West Sussex, Baird expressed astonishment at this summer’s conditions, noting that his cereal harvest ended much earlier than usual with a 25% decrease in crop yields at Stroodelande, his farm.

Despite the common perception of the U.K. as a rainy place, recent years have seen a series of droughts, leading Baird to acknowledge emerging patterns. This summer stands out as the driest he has experienced in his farming career, transforming the typically lush and green English countryside into parched terrain following prolonged heatwaves and scarce rainfall.

With half of England and all of Wales officially declared in drought due to an exceptionally severe dry period, concerns about long-term water security and potential food shortages have resurfaced. The Environment Agency and water companies project a significant water supply deficit by 2050, emphasizing the urgency for sustainable water management practices.

The ongoing drought not only challenges traditional farming methods but also poses threats to farmers’ livelihoods. Eleanor Gilbert’s experience of battling a field fire in Hampshire highlights the heightened fire risks faced by farmers amidst the dry conditions. Firefighters across England and Wales have been exceptionally busy combating wildfires due to the dry vegetation, exacerbated by the scorching heat.

The changing climate has prompted farmers like Baird and Christensen to adapt by incorporating organic matter into their soils to enhance moisture retention. Christensen, for instance, has shifted from planting maize to wheat for its resilience to heat stress. The impact of the weather extends to livestock as well, with Christensen’s cows producing less milk due to heat-induced stress and reduced grazing options.

As water scarcity looms, plans for building reservoirs in England have been outlined, albeit with concerns raised over the water-intensive nature of new data centres. The consequential strain on water resources poses challenges for various sectors, including those reliant on the country’s intricate network of canals and rivers, where low water levels have led to closures and disruptions.

The evolving climate conditions have not only affected farming practices but also altered the way of life for individuals residing on houseboats along the waterways. The contrast between wet winters causing breaches and dry summers leading to low water levels underscores the unpredictability and challenges posed by extreme weather patterns. Despite these obstacles, the resilience and adaptability of individuals like Nici Griffin reflect a pragmatic approach to navigating the changing environmental landscape.
