Toronto Hydro has confirmed that power has been reinstated to a large number of residents in the eastern part of the city and some downtown areas following a power outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. The utility made an announcement on the social media platform X at 10:30 p.m., stating that power had been fully restored by its crews. Toronto Hydro expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the outage and expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation of customers and the community during the restoration efforts.

As per Toronto Hydro’s outage map, more than 31,000 customers were impacted by the outage as of 9:40 p.m. The widespread outage was attributed to a loss of supply by Hydro One, as stated by Toronto Hydro. At a certain point, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) indicated that elevators and escalators at several Line 2 subway stations were affected by the outage.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) reported a power disruption in multiple buildings and advised individuals to vacate the premises immediately or avoid the area. Affected locations included Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus. TMU explained that evacuations were necessary due to potential risks to safety systems like fire detection and sprinklers.

TMU further mentioned that all classes, labs, and exams were expected to be paused during the evacuation period. Employees were instructed to find alternative workspaces or take breaks nearby until power was reinstated.
