A Vancouver ex-band instructor has been permanently barred from teaching after admitting to a sexual assault on a student. Robert Kyle Ledingham is forbidden from seeking a teaching license in British Columbia following his guilty plea to one count of sexual assault in May 2024, as per a consent agreement from the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation. Ledingham, a certified teacher since May 2008, faced initial charges of two counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault in September 2020.

The accusations involved a student who volunteered at a high school in the Vancouver School District where Ledingham led the high school band between April and June 2019, according to the agreement. The student, whose identity is protected by a court order, attended a different high school from where Ledingham taught.

In his guilty plea in May 2024, the band teacher admitted to one count of sexual assault, with the remaining charges being dropped, as outlined in the agreement. He received a 15-month conditional sentence order, which included a condition prohibiting him from seeking employment in any role with authority over individuals under 18.

The Vancouver School District terminated Ledingham’s employment in November 2024. In the consent agreement, the former band instructor acknowledged his actions as professional misconduct and agreed to a lifetime ban on applying for a teaching certificate.
