In the realm of cryptocurrency, actor Ben McKenzie, known for his role in The O.C., has shifted his focus to what he deems as the “largest Ponzi scheme in history.” McKenzie highlights that while a select few insiders profit immensely from cryptocurrency, the majority of regular investors end up losing money. His insights are depicted in his latest documentary titled Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, which premiered with limited screenings in April.

Initially intrigued by cryptocurrency due to a friend’s recommendation, McKenzie, with an economics background, delved into the industry and was struck by what he perceived as its lack of substance. In 2022, he testified in a U.S. Senate committee hearing on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.

Despite some criticisms from industry figures claiming his documentary sensationalizes negative narratives about cryptocurrency, McKenzie advocates for increased regulation to safeguard investors. He stresses the importance of protecting individuals from potential scams and fraud within the cryptocurrency space.

In a recent interview with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe on The Current, McKenzie delved into his documentary’s theme, emphasizing the notion that money is fundamentally built on trust. He scrutinizes cryptocurrencies’ claim to operate independently of human trust, cautioning against the dangers of privatizing currency issuance and transferring trust from the public to the private sector.

While acknowledging that some individuals have profited from cryptocurrency, McKenzie underscores the recurring pattern where a privileged few amass significant wealth while countless investors face financial losses. He cites the example of Trump coin, a meme coin linked to the former U.S. president, where his family reportedly gained $1.4 billion while investors suffered losses exceeding $3 billion.

In an exploration of investor behavior, McKenzie notes that despite experiencing substantial losses, some investors remain steadfast in their belief in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. He attributes this persistence to a psychological phenomenon known as the sunk-cost fallacy, where individuals are reluctant to admit failure after investing significant time and resources.

McKenzie’s documentary sheds light on the struggles of men who are disproportionately drawn to cryptocurrency’s allure of quick wealth and financial independence. He points out that the cryptocurrency industry often exploits male vulnerability by promoting a narrative of easy riches and privacy from government intervention. This narrative, he argues, perpetuates a culture of gambling and discourages open discussion about financial losses, exacerbating the adverse impact on individuals.

Ultimately, McKenzie’s documentary challenges the notion that cryptocurrency offers a superior financial system, highlighting its shortcomings and emphasizing the need for investor protection and regulatory oversight. He asserts that while conventional financial systems may have flaws, cryptocurrencies present greater risks and vulnerabilities, urging investors to exercise caution and skepticism in their dealings within the crypto sphere.
