U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce planned joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the need to denuclearize Iran and highlighting his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump expressed concerns about the cost and the perceived hostility these exercises might convey to North Korea, which he described as non-threatening and respectful during his presidency.
In a social media statement, Trump mentioned that it was too late to cancel the upcoming exercises but instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back the joint military drills. He also revealed that South Korea declined to join the U.S. in efforts to denuclearize Iran, a decision that Trump found disappointing.
This action is not unprecedented as Trump had previously attempted to halt these exercises during his first term, labeling them as provocative. Despite Trump’s directive, South Korea’s Defense Ministry confirmed that the exercises commenced as scheduled on Monday.
The South Korean presidential Blue House is evaluating Trump’s decision and hopes that the amicable relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders will foster meaningful dialogue for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. The two allies plan to maintain coordination on their defense posture and joint military activities.
The joint training involving 18,000 South Korean troops over 11 days aimed to enhance readiness against potential North Korean threats. These exercises were intended to reinforce the alliance’s role as vital for regional peace and security, underscoring the unwavering commitment between the U.S. and South Korea to safeguard their territories.
Following North Korea’s recent ballistic missile testing and threats of severe actions against the U.S. and South Korea, Trump’s decision faced criticism from Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, who viewed the move as shortsighted. North Korea’s aggressive stance is perceived as an attempt to strengthen its military capabilities and leverage in future negotiations.
Despite the strained relations between North Korea and the U.S., Trump has expressed interest in resuming discussions with Kim Jong-un. The U.S. president’s decision to curtail military exercises with South Korea came after a recent meeting with Kim, where Trump emphasized their positive rapport despite external perceptions.
