Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday, veering away from a direct hit on Hawaii but still unleashing strong winds and heavy rainfall across the state. The storm caused widespread flooding and triggered a search-and-rescue operation after flash floods swept away homes in Na’alehu and Wai’ohinu, near the southern tip of the Big Island.

Authorities, including Civil Defence, the National Guard, and a coast guard helicopter, mobilized to assist in the rescue efforts amid challenging conditions with rushing water, debris, and darkness. Tragically, one person lost their life in a vehicle accident in the South Point area of the Big Island.

Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda emphasized the hazardous situation due to the storm’s impact, with Honolulu experiencing a high number of weather-related incidents, including downed trees, roofs, power lines, and a swimmer rescue. Power outages affected over 200,000 homes and businesses, with nearly two-thirds of the Big Island’s customers left without electricity.

Although Hurricane Lala skirted Hawaii without making a direct landfall, it generated powerful waves along the coast and led to significant rainfall, mudslides, and flooding. The storm prompted tropical storm warnings for multiple islands, with concerns about potential flooding and wildfires exacerbated by strong winds.

As of the latest update, Lala was located west of Honolulu with sustained winds of 100 km/h, moving at a speed of approximately 28 km/h. Forecasters predict minimal changes in storm intensity through Monday, with a potential for Lala to regain hurricane status later in the week.

The impact of the storm was particularly severe in certain areas, with parts of the Big Island receiving up to 89 centimeters of rain, posing risks to residents in high-altitude regions. The state took precautionary measures, opening shelters, canceling events, and advising ranchers to safeguard their livestock.

The aftermath of Hurricane Lala left devastation in its wake, with properties damaged, power outages, and individuals bracing for further challenges. Despite the ongoing impacts, residents appreciated the state’s improved preparedness and response efforts compared to previous natural disasters.
