Former CFL player Marc-Antoine Dequoy has made a return to competitive football just six months after retiring. The 31-year-old safety is now part of the Canadian men’s team participating in the IFAF World Flag Football Championship in Duesseldorf, Germany. Dequoy decided to retire from the CFL in February after a career with the Montreal Alouettes lasting five seasons, citing physical limitations that prevented him from committing to a full season of play.

Initially hesitant about trying flag football, Dequoy eventually embraced the opportunity after speaking with friends and doing some research. Despite taking a break from football to co-host a television show, Dequoy felt a void and reached out to coach Paul LaPolice expressing his interest in returning to the sport.

Having achieved success in the CFL, including participating in two Grey Cups and winning one in 2023, Dequoy is now facing a new challenge in flag football. The game features a smaller field and unique rules that differ from traditional football, requiring players to adapt their skills accordingly.

Canada’s flag football team had to adjust its schedule in the tournament after Nigeria withdrew due to visa issues. This change resulted in Canada playing two preliminary-round matches instead of three. The top finishers in the tournament will secure spots in the Olympics, with the United States already having a guaranteed spot as the host nation.

Dequoy expressed his excitement about the opportunity to potentially qualify for the Olympics through flag football, highlighting the significance of representing Canada at such a prestigious event. Despite the challenges and adjustments required in transitioning to flag football, Dequoy is determined to give his best to help his team achieve success in the tournament.
