The convicted killer, Curtis Dagenais, who murdered two Saskatchewan RCMP officers and injured another, is facing a court battle in Saskatoon over the fate of his 1986 blue GMC 1500 truck, which is currently stored at RCMP headquarters in Regina. The Crown is seeking to have the truck forfeited and destroyed, a move Dagenais is opposing.
The tragic incident occurred on July 6, 2006, when Dagenais, attempting to evade arrest in Spiritwood, led RCMP constables on a chase that ended with him fatally shooting Constables Marc Bourdages and Robin Cameron, and injuring Constable Michelle Knopp. Dagenais was subsequently convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in 2009.
The issue of the truck’s forfeiture has resurfaced in court after an application oversight. Crown prosecutor Scott Bartlett, who initially raised the issue in 2021, explained that the matter had slipped through the cracks. Dagenais, maintaining his innocence, wants to preserve the truck, believing that the bullet holes in it could support his case. However, Innocence Canada, an organization Dagenais sought help from, has not taken on his case.
In a recent hearing before Justice Daryl Labach, Dagenais, representing himself, expressed his opposition to the forfeiture and requested more time to secure legal representation. Labach granted him an adjournment to seek legal counsel, with the forfeiture hearing scheduled for August 31. Despite claims of wrongful conviction and alleged new evidence, the Crown maintains that nothing substantial has emerged to overturn Dagenais’s conviction.
