The movie “The Odyssey” continues to dominate the box office, raking in $1.1 billion in the United States since its release on July 17, as reported by The Associated Press. This Greek epic adaptation marks director Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous hits like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight.” In comparison, “The Odyssey” has outperformed his 2024 biopic “Oppenheimer,” which fell just short of hitting the $1 billion mark with around $975 million in revenue.

Another film making waves is Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which exceeded expectations by earning $360 million in its opening weekend and reaching a total of $1.67 billion globally. This achievement places it among the highest-grossing movies in history, with only “Avengers: Endgame” surpassing $300 million in its debut weekend back in 2019.

“The Odyssey” is set to expand its reach further as it prepares for a full release in the lucrative Chinese market. China plans to dedicate a significant portion of its 800-Imax screen network to showcase the film, with high expectations for its success.

The demand for “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has been fueled by the appeal of Imax technology. Despite challenges faced by the film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic, Imax has seen a surge in popularity. Originally known for its educational content, Imax transitioned to become a significant player in Hollywood with major releases like “Avatar” and “Oppenheimer.”

Christopher Nolan’s strong ties to Imax are evident in “The Odyssey,” which was entirely filmed in Imax format, making it IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release with $147.3 million in the U.S. alone. These blockbuster movies have contributed to Hollywood’s successful box office year, with ticket sales surpassing previous years, and the industry is on track to reach $4 billion in summer theatrical revenue, a positive indicator of Hollywood’s recovery post-pandemic.
