In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV show set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would tune in to watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, especially admiring actress Mag Ruffman in the role of Aunt Olivia. When Czajka learned that Ruffman would be appearing at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the show, she eagerly purchased a ticket.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out event, celebrating the beloved Canadian series that aired in over 100 countries from 1990 to 1996.
“Road to Avonlea” followed the story of Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show garnered a dedicated following that continues to grow.
The convention spanned three days, featuring oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the cast and crew, and tours to filming locations and Montgomery-related sites. Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and escape.
Ruffman expressed her gratitude for the fans’ enthusiasm at the convention, emphasizing the lasting impact of the show on both viewers and those involved in its creation. Czajka shared her joy in rewatching the series with her children, underscoring the rarity of finding a show that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids alike.
